Quick instructions for impatient:

1. Make sure you have universe, multiverse and restricted repositories enabled
2. Add the following repository to your sources.list file, according to your CPU type:

3. apt-get update ; apt-get install cinelerra

I am still without access to Ubuntu x86 workstation so please tell me if things break. I realized that these builds are 32-bit, I also plan to provide 64-bit builds in future. Also, if anyone sees the need for any other architecture optimized builds (Core2, PentiumM, ..) tell me, preferably with GCC optimization parameters.

In last few weeks a number of Ubuntu users asked when will I start providing updated Cinelerra 2.1 packages. The answer, sadly, is that I will not and that I can not. As such I invite anyone who wants to take this roll over to mail me and I’ll add your website to my README.

Even though it is hard for me to make this decision it is logical and for the best. Reasons include the fact that I’m currently studying abroad and have only my iBook with me. Having a PowerPC platform effectively means that I can not even test packages I would build. The other reason is that for some months the Xen virtual machine I was using to build the packages is offline. It does not seem that it will be back online in near future. The last reason is that I will not be using Cinelerra while abroad so I would like to leave this task to someone who is more motivated to have up-to date packages available.

UPDATE: April 15, 2007 – I’ve updated the packages for Feisty.

you would most probably want to wait for 2.1 changes to be merged to
SVN...

timeframe of that is however completely unknown, since it is very hard
to merge such a big patch whole at once, taking into account all the
divergencies...

I uploaded Cinelerra Dapper and Breezy packages for svn revision 829 (the latest one has problems with file upload). I also rebuilt dapper packages against libmjpegtools in dapper so there will be no more conflicts. Apt line problems are also fixed. The coolest thing that I actually managed to do is to fully automate package creation scripts so now I only have to sync against the svn and run a single shell script and after a few hours of compile time just copy the packages to web server.

In a few days I’ll also start building sid (and maybe also sarge packages) and give access to Andraz, so Ubuntu packages won’t lag after Debian ones anymore! And after that also some venturing into world of 64-bits. After that I plan to invest some time into polishing Debian packages a bit.

At this point I would also like to publicly display optimizations flags for each arch (taken from Andrazs debian rules files) and invite you to tell me how they could be improved and also maybe invite extra arch or two for which optimized packages could be built (like opteron or something):

pentium4: CFLAGS=”-ffast-math -O2 -mmmx -msse -msse2 -mfpmath=sse,387 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -fprefetch-loop-arrays -funroll-loops -minline-all-stringops”

athlonxp: CFLAGS=”-ffast-math -O2 -mmmx -msse -mfpmath=sse,387 -march=athlon-xp -fprefetch-loop-arrays -funroll-loops -minline-all-stringops”

So, today I built Cinelerra dapper packages. Quick instructions until I updated the README:

to your /etc/apt/sources.list (or whatever GUI interface to apt sources you are using) add:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper main universe multiverse restricted

(note the universe and multiverse)

and then add:

deb http://www.kiberpipa.org/~gandalf/ubuntu/dapper/mjpegtools ./

this time I’ve backported/rebuilt all the dependencies so there is no need for marilliat repository anymore.

Now you can add one of the following depending your arch:

deb http://www.kiberpipa.org/~gandalf/ubuntu/dapper/cinelerra/i686/ ./

or

deb http://www.kiberpipa.org/~gandalf/ubuntu/dapper/cinelerra/pentium4/ ./

or

deb http://www.kiberpipa.org/~gandalf/ubuntu/dapper/cinelerra/athlonxp/ ./

and then of course:

apt-get install cinelerra

So with formal instructions out of the way, I’d like to thank everyone who mailed me or otherwise bugged for these packages. Also please note that since a few months I’m not using Ubuntu anymore so I have to rely on your feedback to actually find out about bugs or breakage.

Andraz also figured out a few days ago how to build amd64 version of cinelerra packages so they might also happen quite soon.

I finally found time to rebuild cinelerra packages for Ubuntu Breezy. So here they are: Cinelerra 1:2.0.0-1svn20060419. I also fixed the problem with freebob repository by just compiling everything myself and eliminating the need for it.
Instructions as always on: http://www.kiberpipa.org/~gandalf/ubuntu/README
