It\u2019s very important for them and hard to come by for many of its members. They don\u2019t focus on any special disability.<br \/>\nThey\u2019ve started in 1998, started with with mailing lists, later moved to <a class=\"zem_slink freebase\/guid\/9202a8c04000641f800000000009fb6c\" title=\"LiveJournal\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/\">LiveJournal<\/a> in 2003 (about 350 people there). No harassment would be tolerated at all.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBeing studied\u201d &#8211; often academics want to talk to people with disabilities. Community members usually just want to talk to each other and not being studied and trying to explain themselves all the time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Interdependent Models of Access to Virtual World<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-img zemanta-action-dragged\" style=\"margin: 1em; display: block;\">\n<div>\n<dl class=\"wp-caption  alignright\" style=\"width: 250px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Giverny Spirit XLIV\u2026!!!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurecuhalev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/2344585350_f06f51df42_m.jpg\" alt=\"Giverny Spirit XLIV\u2026!!!\" \/><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd zemanta-img-attribution\" style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">Image by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/62202285@N00\/2344585350\/\">Denis Collette&#8230;!!!<\/a> via Flickr<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Accommodation for individual users &#8211; \u201cguide dog\u201d that tells the names of the objects in SL environment.<\/li>\n<li>Architectural access to community space<\/li>\n<li> if you build your online spaces to support accessibility, it can be more welcoming to all people.<\/li>\n<li> Build it in a way that is useful\/easier everyone.<\/li>\n<li>Universal Design for conversation &#8211; some people need synchronic communication, others would need asynchronies communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Differences between formal\/unformal styles and comments can be off-putting to some people. Different channels allow for better access for everyone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integrate multiple channels<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Build strong cross-platform relationship that distribute information on multiple channels. This allows greater amount of people to communicate as not all the platforms are accessible to all people all the time.<\/li>\n<li>We should be building platforms that allow to aggregate and federate information across the web\/platforms\/multiple-channels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Best practices for communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-img zemanta-action-dragged\" style=\"margin: 1em; display: block;\">\n<div>\n<dl class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33645693@N08\/3860728084\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\".cold and tireD\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurecuhalev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/3860728084_1e2d1fb1d9_m.jpg\" alt=\".cold and tireD\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd zemanta-img-attribution\" style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">Image by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33645693@N08\/3860728084\/\">27147<\/a> via Flickr<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Provide accessible formats for event information, e.g not just PDF flyer but also in plain text. (508\/WCAG guidelines)<\/li>\n<li>Live events in virtual worlds should have an IRC relay and audio feeds for voice chat. It might be also useful to everyone that would prefer alternative communication channels.<\/li>\n<li>Asynchronous methods (blogs, forums) should be used along with synchronous (e.g. IRC).<\/li>\n<li>Be inclusive of various speech and writing styles.<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge all contributions from the community, not just the most active members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Give responsibility to most active community members. This allows the community to manage itself and own itself.<\/p>\n<p>In bigger communities, it\u2019s useful to acknowledge them also in private on publicly in community as then they have a feeling that it\u2019s really a relationship.
